Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is USDA FSIS?
USDA FSIS, United States Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service, is the public health regulatory agency responsible for ensuring that the United States commercial supply of meat, poultry, and egg products is safe, wholesome, and correctly labeled and packaged. *We offer USDA FSIS (Est. P-1788) Everyone can be slaughtered under inspection. Homesteaders, Farmers, and you!

We will also offer ice bags for sale, crate rental for transportation, crate sanitation services for your crates before returning them at the end of the day, as well as scheduling options.
  • Do you only offer processing and slaughter for chicken?
Turkey, Duck, Chicken, and Quail are all now offered for Slaughter and Processing on our intake form. We hope to add squab, pheasant, and chukar partridge to our offerings soon. Sign up for our newsletter to stay up to date on changes to available services.
  • Do you offer pick-up and/or delivery?
Not at this time. You must deliver your live birds and pick up your processed poultry. We hope to add pickup and delivery options in the future.
  • Do you sell live poultry?

  • I received my poultry but it looks like some of the seals are popped, does that effect the meat?
No, Popped seals do happen from time to time. Freezing and thawing tends to change the shape of the meat which can lead to compromised seals. A loose package does not mean the meat it spoiled or damaged or unwholesome in anyway. Note*, it may be more susceptible to freezer burn.
  • I have a request I don't see on your intake form, or website.
Learning and growing is our favorite thing to do on a day that ends in Y. 😉 Please let us know what your looking for, something you thought of or a value add that would make your experience better. We will accommodate what we can on a case by case basis and add it to the research and development teams todo list if we need to. The early bird gets the worm and the squeaky wheel gets oiled. Our passion is to meet all of your expectations so don't hesitate to start a conversation. (860) 302-7847 steadfastpps@gmail.com
  • Do you process deer/beef/pork/lamb etc.?
No, We are a poultry processing facility only and can not process any other type of meat. Non-amenable species fall under voluntary slaughter and in the future, we may add rabbit and deer programs. Keep an eye out for any changes in our offerings. See the USDA's Definition of non-amenable species here.
  • Why is there a USDA charge for processing quail, but not chicken, duck, or turkey?
Chicken, Duck, and Turkey are classified as Poultry by the USDA and the inspection is paid for by the taxpayers through the Federal Government. The USDA does NOT classify Quail as Poultry, so the inspection is considered voluntary and requires the producer to pay for an inspector for the day. Because we are a USDA FSIS Poultry Slaughter Facility we can only Slaughter under USDA FSIS. We pass on this Voluntary Inspection cost to you the Quail Producer for this service provided by the USDA through our facility. Quail Voluntary Slaughter USDA Inspector Charge is based on the amount of time the inspector is on-site and the rate the USDA is charging at that time. See the USDA's Definition of non-amenable species that fall under voluntary inspection here.
  • I just want chickens slaughtered for my home, do I need USDA?
We are a USDA FSIS facility. That's the regulatory body we work with. Anyone can slaughter with us under USDA, Moms, Dads, Homesteaders, Big Farmers, Small Farmers, Grandpa, everyone. The only difference in price has to do with volume. (Flock Size)

  • When should I stop providing feed and water for my poultry?
Feed should be removed 12-18 hours before bringing the birds to the processing and slaughter facility, or between 12pm - 6 pm the day before your slaughter appointment. You will receive email and text reminders the day before your slaughter appointment. Steadfast Farms Poultry Processing & Slaughter will add a 20% of total order fee if evidence is found in the bird's crop that feed has not been removed as directed. When feed isn't removed slaughter is slower and dirtier. Water should not be pulled until transport.
  • Do you rent crates for the transportation of live poultry?
